From the soaring peaks of Eryri National Park to the rugged mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, the Calon Lân 300 takes you southwards through the wild heart of Wales, following the legendary Cambrian Way.

Conceived in 1968 by mountain enthusiast Tony Drake, who published its first guidebook in 1984, the Cambrian Way grew from a bold ambition: to link Wales’s magnificent mountain landscapes in one unforgettable journey. Known as the “mountain connoisseur’s walk”, it’s a route with adventure woven into its history – and precious little interest in making things easy.

Its highlights read like a roll call of Welsh mountain legends: Yr Wyddfa, the rugged Rhinogau, the dramatic heights of Cadair Idris, and the vast, lonely uplands around Pumlumon. Further south await the remote beauty of Elenydd, the lake of Llyn y Fan Fach beneath the Carmarthen Fans, and the sweeping ridges of Pen y Fan. Between them lie mist-softened valleys, mountain lakes, and the occasional sheep looking distinctly unimpressed by your efforts.

You’ll have 8.5 full days – 204 hours – to complete this extraordinary 300-mile crossing. Each checkpoint offers a welcome haven: a chance to rest, refuel, and gather yourself before the next stretch of trail calls you onwards. In Wales, “just over the next hill” can be quite an ambitious promise.
